Rutgers and Boston College have faced each other 26 times in a series that began in 1919.

Boston College leads the all-time series 19-6-1, and owns a 12-0-1 record after Rutgers won their inaugural Big East matchup in 1991.

The Scarlet Knights are 1-1 after rallying past UMass, 48-21, and losing at Iowa, 30-0, in their Big Ten opener. They have a bye this weekend before hosting Boston College, which is 2-0 after beating Virginia Tech, 35-28, in Atlantic Coast Conference action and drubbing FCS-foe Richmond, 45-13.

For Boston College coach Steve Addazio’s squad, the Rutgers game will be a homecoming for 17 Eagles who hail from New Jersey, including four starters in quarterback Anthony Brown (St. John Vianney), tight end Korab Idrizi (Bergen Catholic), offensive lineman Ben Petrula (St. Peter’s Prep) and defensive end Marcus Valdez (Don Bosco Prep).

In all, 10 Garden State natives are on the Eagles’ current two-deep. That shouldn’t come as a surprise considering Boston College has traditionally recruited New Jersey well and its current staff is littered with Jersey ties, including offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian (River Vale), wide receivers coach Rich Gunnell (East Windsor) and offensive line coach Phil Trautwein (Voorhees).

Rutgers and Boston College first announced in December 2016 the renewal of its Big East rivalry with a two-game, home-and-home series for 2026 and 2027.

In January 2017, the schools expanded the series from two to four games, with matchups added in 2019 and 2022. Rutgers will host Boston College this year and in 2027 and will travel to Chestnut Hill in 2022 and 2026.

The Sept. 21 clash will be their first meeting since Boston College’s tumultuous exit from the Big East in 2004.
